Which digital twin software should you shortlist?
Three answers. The finder drops every tool that does not do your job, puts the ones your team can run first, then follows the job ranking in the table below; price only breaks ties. A quote-only tool with no public estimate counts as unknown, not as over budget. Nothing you pick leaves your browser.
Example: for a product, machine or plant twin, between $10,000 and $100,000, built by developers:
Siemens Xcelerator Price on request
Product, line and factory twins from one vendor. Entry price unknown (quote only, no public estimate): ask for it in the first call. Suits your team. Read the profile
NVIDIA Omniverse Fits all three
Physically accurate 3D scenes, free for production since May 2026. Within your budget: free licence. Suits your team. Read the profile
IBM Maximo Application Suite Fits all three
Asset maintenance, monitoring and prediction for plants and facilities. Within your budget: Essentials starts under $40,000 a year. Suits your team. Read the profile
A shortlist, not a verdict: ask each vendor to replay a known period of your data before you sign.
Which digital twin software fits which job, and what does it cost?

Why does digital twin software get pricier as the twin gets less physical?
Cloud platforms for things and places publish prices, often in cents; engineering suites are quoted. Simulation tools are free to learn, quoted for business. Process twins are quoted to large companies: the work is in connecting ERP, CRM and finance systems, not in the licence.

- Price
- A free trial download; commercial licences on quote (FlexSim).
Which software builds a digital twin of processes or a whole organization?
Here the twin copies how a company works rather than how a machine runs. Gartner calls it a digital twin of an organization (DTO) and published its first Magic Quadrant for DTO platforms on 27 July 2026, with 18 vendors assessed (GBTEC). Our guide to building a digital twin of an organization explains the method behind it.
01CelonisReal processes rebuilt from ERP and CRM event logs
- Best for
- Large enterprises that want to see their real order-to-cash or procure-to-pay process.
- 2026
- Leader with the highest ability to execute in Gartner's first DTO Magic Quadrant (Celonis). In May 2026 it launched a "Context Model" and agreed to buy Ikigai Labs, a move toward simulation (Constellation Research).
- Price
- Quote only. Third-party estimate: procurement benchmarks cite roughly $150,000 to $300,000+ for entry packages, graded "estimated, not official" (rfp.wiki).
03Palantir FoundryOne operational model that people and apps can act on
- Best for
- Large organizations. Palantir's own documentation says that in many settings its Ontology "serves as a digital twin of the organization" (Palantir).
- Price
- A free developer tier to learn (Palantir); production on quote. Third-party estimate: about $250,000 a year for a narrow single-use-case deployment, with most first contracts between $500,000 and $2 million a year (BD Emerson).
04AI Digital Twin Company (our service)Owner-led service firms of 5 to 50 people
- Best for
- Consulting, executive search, wealth management and interim management firms.
- What it is
- Not a licence: we build the twin of your firm (mandates, people, cash) on a flow engine, and AI agents only play human decisions. It must replay your last 12 months within ±10% on revenue before it advises anything. See it on a fictional firm in the Maison Delaunay case.
- Price
- Builds from $55,555. First playable screen in week two, six to ten weeks to a certified twin.
How does digital twin software work, and where does AI fit?
Whatever the brand, the software stacks the same four layers, and loops back to the real thing:
AI is optional: many twins run on physics and statistics alone. Machine learning predicts failures from sensor history. Language models read messy records into the model and play human choices, such as a client who signs or walks away, which is what makes an AI digital twin of a company. If a language model produces the numbers, you cannot audit the twin; our free Twin Lite simulator runs a flow engine instead, 300 simulated years of a service firm in your browser.
What changed in digital twin software in 2026?
Older top-10 lists are out of date. Four owners changed: ThingWorx and Kepware left PTC for Velotic, a TPG company, in March 2026 (TPG); Hexagon's plant software became Octave, listed in May 2026 (release); Simio went to Aegis Software in January 2026 (press release); and Ansys now belongs to Synopsys (Synopsys). If ThingWorx is on your list, the contract is no longer with PTC.
Prices and partners moved too. NVIDIA made Omniverse free for production use in May 2026 (StorageReview), and Siemens and Dassault Systèmes both tied their twins to NVIDIA (Siemens, Dassault Systèmes). Gartner's first Magic Quadrant for DTO platforms, in July 2026, made process twins a category of their own (GBTEC).
What does digital twin software cost beyond the licence?
Usually more than the licence. On Palantir, BD Emerson writes that first-year implementation and internal staffing often match or exceed the licence cost (BD Emerson). On Celonis, rfp.wiki notes that implementation, partner services and support commonly sit outside software fees (rfp.wiki). Budget for what the price list leaves out: clean data into the model, analyst time to calibrate it, and upkeep when the real system changes. The cheapest first step is a free tier on your own data, with one question you already know the answer to.
What else do people ask about digital twin software?
How do digital twins work?
Data from the real thing (sensors, models, event logs) flows into a model of it. An engine computes how the model behaves, and the twin is checked against what really happened. Once it reproduces the past within agreed error bands, you can change an input and read the likely result before you change the real thing.
Does a digital twin use AI?
Not necessarily. Many industrial twins run on physics and statistics. AI is added to predict failures from history, to read messy data, or to play human decisions. Language models should not compute the numbers themselves.
How do I create my own digital twin?
Name the object and one decision you want to test. Start on a free tier that fits it: Bentley iTwin Community or Autodesk Tandem for a building, the AWS free tier for IoT data, the AnyLogic learning edition for a flow, the Ansys Twin Builder trial for a machine. Make the model replay a past period before you trust a forecast. For a service firm, you can try the idea in five minutes with Twin Lite.
What are the downsides of using digital twins?
Cost beyond the licence (data work, calibration, upkeep), lock-in to one vendor's model format, and false confidence when a twin is never checked against reality. A twin that is not kept in sync drifts away from the thing it copies.
Is there free or open-source digital twin software?
Yes. Eclipse Ditto is an open-source framework for IoT digital twins (Eclipse Foundation). NVIDIA Omniverse is free for production use since May 2026. Bentley iTwin Community, the AnyLogic Personal Learning Edition and the Autodesk Tandem free tier are free to start, with limits on commercial or production use.
Who is the father of digital twins?
Michael Grieves presented the concept in 2002 at the University of Michigan. The term "digital twin" then appeared in a NASA technology roadmap in 2010, as a NASA presentation by John Vickers recounts (NASA).
Method: prices and facts checked on vendor pages on 11 October 2026; third-party price figures are estimates by the named publisher, not vendor list prices. Ranks apply within each job. Corrections: contact@aidigitaltwincompany.com.
Twinning a service firm rather than a machine?
None of the platforms above is built for a firm of 5 to 50 people. Play a free twin of one first, with ten of your numbers, in your browser. We are part of AI Jungle, which also runs the agents that carry the work once the decision is made.
- Play Twin Lite with ten numbers.
- Compare with the firm twin we build.
- Book 30 minutes if the numbers surprise you.
